DRESDEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL EDUCATION FOUNDATION

ABOUT US

The Dresden Elementary School Education Foundation (DESEF) is a 501(c)(3) organization supporting the Dresden Elementary School Community. Our focus is on improving literacy. Studies have shown that children who are not reading at grade level by the end of 3rd grade are 4 times more likely to drop out of high school with a cost to taxpayers of approximately $292,000 per dropout. Among many services, DESEF offers individualized tutoring twice a week for a total of 4 hours/week for select students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade.

MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission is to energize community partners and business resources for the pursuit of educational excellence at Dresden Elementary School.  We support teachers and staff, students and their families, and facilities by funding activities and programs that promote a positive learning environment.

One-to-One Tutoring Program

Introduced in 2015, and remaining as the bedrock of the DESEF, this program provides individualized after-school tutoring twice a week for a total of 4 hours/week for select students in 1st through 3rd grade who read below grade-level. This program is coordinated by Margaret Landry.

Kinder-Kid Readers

This program for Kindergarten students is in its third year and provides 20-minute one-to-one tutoring sessions in the classroom using "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" by Siegfried Engelman. This program is coordinated by Kim Lewis.

 Newcomer One-to-One Tutoring Program

In its second year, this program works with 3rd and 4th grade students that have been in the school system or the United States for less than 2 years and are behind in reading, writing and basic math. Tutors work one-to-one, twice a week for a total of 4 hours/week on the fundamentals necessary for classroom success. This program is coordinated by Laurie Tynor.
