View Dresden Elementary School

The Dresden Elementary School Education Foundation (DESEF) is a 501(c)(3) organization supporting the Dresden Elementary School Community. Our focus is on improving literacy. Studies have shown that children who are not reading at grade level by the end of 3rd grade are 4 times more likely to drop out of high school with a cost to taxpayers of approximately $292,000 per dropout. Among many services, DESEF offers a One-to-One Tutoring Program that provides individualized tutoring twice a week for a total of 4 hours/week for students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade. The intent is for each tutor to remain with their student for 4 years as their mentor and teacher.

Our mission is to energize community partners and business resources for the pursuit of educational excellence at Dresden Elementary School.  We support teachers and staff, students and their families, and facilities by funding activities and programs that promote a positive learning environment.

DESEF brings a new playground to Dresden Elementary School!

In July of 2018, DESEF was awarded a grant for a brand-new playground by KaBOOM!, the national non-profit dedicated to giving all kids the childhood they deserve through great, safe places to play. KaBOOM! matches high-need community organizations with funding partners to design and build a dream playground. We were fortunate to be paired with Cox Enterprises as our funding partner. On October 26, 2018, over 200 volunteers came out, despite pouring rain, to build the new playground in less than 6 hours! It was an amazing day!

Be sure to check our Facebook Page for the most recent DESEF news!

All DESEF programs are run by volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Margaret Landry at (770) 934-9537 or mdlandry@bellsouth.net.

One-to-One Tutoring Program

Introduced in 2015, and remaining as the bedrock of the DESEF, this program provides individualized after-school tutoring twice a week for a total of 4 hours/week for students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade who read below grade-level. This year, 16 students are being tutored by a team of 22 volunteer tutors. In addition, these students are exposed to cultural and outdoor programs through the generosity of community partners such as the Sierra Club and the Alliance Theater.   This program is coordinated by Margaret Landry.

Kinder-Kid Readers

This program for Kindergarten students is in its second year and provides 20-minute one-to-one tutoring sessions in the classroom using "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons" by Siegfried Engelman.  A total of 10 students are being tutored by a team of 5 volunteer tutors. This program is coordinated by Kim Lewis.

Upper-Grade Tutoring Program

This pilot program is working with 3rd grade students, focusing on the basics of speaking, reading and writing English as well as basic math skills. The goal is to improve these skills so that the students will be better able to comprehend the grade-level content in the classroom. The students receive tutoring twice a week for a total of 4 hours/week and the student to tutor ratio is 1:1. The plan is to grow this program to follow these pilot students into the 4th and 5th grades so that, by the end of the 5th grade, they are on-level with both reading and math. This program is coordinated by Laurie Tynor.
